Argument: Freedom comes at a cost

  1. Happiness and wellbeing in the world are maximized only if humans have free will: Without free will there would be no genuine happiness in the world!
  2. If humans have free will, then they are free to cause evil.
  3. If humans are free to cause evil, then there can be evil.
  4. Happiness and wellbeing in the world can be maximized only if there can be evil in the world.
  5. The creator of the world is (i) aware of all the consequences of his actions, (ii) can create every conceivable world, (iii) does not want evil, but (iv) primarily wants to maximize happiness and wellbeing in the world.
  6. If the creator of the world is (i) aware of all the consequences of his actions, (ii) can create every conceivable world, (iii) does not want evil, but (iv) primarily wants to maximize happiness and wellbeing in the world, and this, however, is only possible if there can be evil in the world, then he will accept this unwanted side effect and not create a world without evil.
  7. The creator of the world does not create a world without evil.
  8. It is not the case: If the creator of the world had been aware of all consequences of his actions, could have created every conceivable world, and didn't want evil, then he would have created a world without evil.
